ISTE SIG handbook Reference on Name change:

SIGs may choose to pursue a name change by drafting a proposal that contains the following:

Current name

New name

Reason for name change

The SIG naming convention follows this format: SIGXX, where XX represents a shortened version of the name. This formula is flexible (as in SIG1to1, SIGTel) but there should be a solid reason to stray from the convention.

Current Name:  SIGTel to mean SIG Telelearning.

New Name:  SIGOL to mean SIG Online Learning

Justification (reason for change):

  1. SIGTEL was named TeleLearning to go along with the term "telecommunicaitons" .

  2. Since 1991, the Special Interest Group for Telelearning (SIGTel), a SIG of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), has recognized creative educators for their pioneering use of telelearning activities to provide innovative learning opportunities for students in Grades K–16. http://www.iste.org/content/navigationmenu/membership/sigs/sigtel_telelearning_/sigtel_online_learning_award/sigtel_online_learning_award.htm.

  3. For the past seventeen years, SIGtel award was known as Online Learning award.
  4. The prefix "tele" is a thing of the past including Television and Telephone.
  5. The word "telelearning" needs an interpretation to the new and young teachers; however, every one understanda the term, "online".
  6. A simple google search reveals that the word Online comes uo with 2 8,950,000 time versus 132,000 times for SIGTel.
  7. The members at the business meeting in 2007 and in 2008 voted to change the name from SIGTel to SIGOL.
