What is it?

  1. Management/PIM application - part of MS Office but little known.
  2. Its organization and interface mimic a three-ring binder on steroids. Visible, color-coded Notebooks, Sections, and Tabs make navigation intuitive. You can tag pages to allow even more granular groupings that are not restricted to one notebook. Further, it's easy to move or copy content. ON2007 also allows links between pages, and templates can be created to allow you to pop up a class list on a moment's notice.
  3. OneNote2007 will accept handwritten text and try to understand the words you wrote, allowing searches.
  4. Searching for text ALSO searches and returns pages with handwritten instances of the string you looked for. This happens even when you have not "converted" the handwriting to text.
  5. It does not try to offer as much control over the appearance/layout of text as a word processor.
  6. It integrates well with Outlook for to-do's.
  7. It can build/portray information in tables.

 

When is it good to use?

  1. I use this on a tablet which can add value and productivity.
  2. My students write into it as their content is projected. That way the session is captured.

 

 

How can you use One Note in the classroom?

  1. One amazing feature: Two students can write/draw in one page at the same time -- on two computers -- over a network, which a wiki will not allow. This is a big subject! see the hints above.  I use a tablet (graphics tablet or Tablet PC) and that makes math easy. The ids come up to the front of the room to write and demonstrate ideas in OneNote pages shown by the projector.

OneNote 2007 is included with the student/Teacher version of Office 2007.

 

NOTE: there are lots of add-on tools for this application that extend its abilities. They are called PowerToys and offer specialized help or general capabilities. One creates a calendar of OneNote activity (valuable) another smooths entry into a blog through OneNote.
