Jing - http://www.jingproject.com/

What is it?

  1.  From TechSmith's website: The concept of Jing is the always-ready program that instantly captures and shares images and video…from your computer to anywhere.
  2. Jing is a free (at the moment and for a while longer) tool for capturing and annotating screen images and screen recordings (up to 5 minutes) and then sharing them easily through embedding on your blog or website or linking to them.  It works with Flickr (for capturing and sharing images).

When is it good to use JIng?

  1.   When you want to capture or record something on the screen easily and need to share it right away.
  2.   When you don't need the full power of TechSmith's "full meal deal" products like SnagIt or Camtasia Studio.

How can you use JIng in the Classroom?

In the library, it could be used as a tutorial for frequently asked questions.  I created a simple jing to show students how to find a book in the library using the online card catalog.  It could be embedded into the library home page, or a blog.

I was introduced to the jing project by an online instructor.  I am taking grad courses online at Salem State, and he used to comment on papers and projects that we handed in.  I imagine it being a useful tool for 'online' teaching and learning.
