What is a wiki? Check out this video.

What was your first experience setting up a wiki for your a workshop, what did you learn?

I set up a wiki about wikis and blogs to use in a workshop on wikis and blogs. I learned it was an easy way to organize information and share it with others. Check out my wikis and blogs wiki

What workshops worked well with the wiki, which didn't?

I have not found a workshop which did not work well with a wiki. I love to make specific subject wikis for my workshops. However, it is tough to get people to add their own resources to a wiki. I think people are uncomfortable about adding their own content to a wiki. People are accustomed to seeing websites as static and not dynamic.

I did make a wiki with a colleague of mine about information literacy and website validity. It was both easy and fun. We could both add resources anywhere we could access the Internet. We did not have to be face to face to work on the wiki. In the end, we made a wiki filled with resources from both of us. Imagine the wiki which could be produced by more than two people. Check out our website validity wiki.

Did you have a difficult time introducing PBwiki in your workshops?  If so, how did you convince your workshop participants?

I have not had a hard time introducing wikis in my workshops. In fact, I had a school where my PowerPoint with links to various websites would not work so I put the website links into a wiki and the teachers were able to access them via the wiki. Check out my academic vocabulary wiki.

How did your workshop participants adapt to using a wiki in the workshop?

Most of the reviews for the wikis were positive. The participants liked having the resources organized and being able to come back to the resources at their leisure later.

What should first time wiki users be aware of?

I think setting up a wiki is fast and easy. However, adults are more reluctant to add their own content to a wiki. Children have been growing up with technology and computers, and they are more comfortable with dynamic content. Therefore, it is easy to convince them to be part of a collaborative effort. One big concern in a school district where students may be adding content to a wiki is the privacy level of the wiki. In a school district, students must be taught Internet safety and how to use the Internet properly. Of course, one may make the wiki public or private with PB Wiki.
